According to the National Center on Improving Literacy, the Science of Reading is a collection of research from multiple fields of study using methods that confirm and disconfirm theories on how children best learn to read. Researchers continue to examine how to teach reading and writing, so our practices also need to evolve based on the latest evidence. The Science of Reading is not a specific program or product you can buy. Based on the current research five areas have been identified as needing to be explicitly taught in order to help children learn to read. These areas include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
